The first annual Meera Gandhi Giving Back Foundation Award was presented to actor Mark Ruffalo for his community service at the 12th Woodstock Film Festival held in Woodstock, New York on September 23- 25, 2011.
The Giving Back Foundation established the award as a 5-year commitment in culture and the arts to the Woodstock Film Festival, to be given annually to an actor, producer, director, filmmaker or screenwriter who best exemplifies "giving back to humanity" in his or her own particular field in the film industry.
The Giving Back Foundation's CEO and Founder Meera Gandhi presented the award onstage to Mark Ruffalo at the Maverick Awards Ceremony at the Festival, where Meera Gandhi described Mark Ruffalo as someone who not only excels in acting, but in screenwriting and directing, and who also devotes his energy to community service and to making the world a better place by championing for environmental causes. Also present at the Maverick Awards were actress Ellen Barkin, actors Timothy Hutton and Vincent D'Onofrio, director Barry Levinson, Woodstock Film Festival Founder Meira Blaustein, and many others.
The documentary film GIVING BACK was screened during the Festival to a sold out, standing room only crowd at the Woodstock Film Festival, and Meera Gandhi also participated in a lively panel discussion on Women in Film.
